Back by popular demand, Marc Lasry returns for Part II of our Investing in Sports series, this time joined by Alex Lasry. With a discussion led by Marley Hughes, they’ll explore the expanding business of sports, emerging investment strategies, and where this fast-growing asset class is headed next.

Marc Lasry

Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Avenue Capital

Mr. Lasry co-founded Avenue Capital Group in 1995, and credit investing has been the focus of his professional career for over 41 years. Prior to forming Amroc Investments, LLC (“Amroc”) as an independent entity, Mr. Lasry managed capital for Amroc Investments, L.P., an investment fund affiliated with the Robert M. Bass Group. Prior to that, Mr. Lasry was Co–Director of the Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization Department at Cowen & Company. Prior to Cowen, he was the Director of the Private Debt Department at Smith Vasiliou Management Company, the firm where he first became involved in the distressed debt markets. He spent the prior year practicing law at Angel & Frankel where he focused on bankruptcies. Mr. Lasry also clerked for the Honorable Edward Ryan, former Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Alex Lasry

The Chief Executive Officer of the NYNJ Host Committee for the FIFA World Cup 2026™

The local organizing body responsible for delivering eight FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches in the NYNJ region, including the Final match. The organization coordinates between key city, state and federal stakeholders and FIFA to ensure a world-class event. The committee’s goal is to create the most engaging, accessible, and impactful FIFA World Cup 2026™ experience for all fans, athletes, partners, and NYNJ communities. In his role, Lasry oversees all facets of the committee’s work across the New York and New Jersey region, including coordination with local leaders, stadium operations, fan engagement, and legacy planning. Lasry brings a unique blend of experience in government, sports, and tourism to this role. He most recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Travel and Tourism at the U.S. Department of Commerce (2023–2025), where he led national efforts to revitalize the tourism industry. Prior to that, he was a senior executive and part owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, helping to transform the franchise into an NBA champion and a model of sports business innovation. Lasry holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business. He has a superhero wife and 3 beautiful children.

Marley Hughes

CEO and Co-Founder of Magnolia Hill Partners

a family office focused on high alpha opportunities in data centers, professional sports, commercial real estate, and private equity. With a career rooted in relationship-driven capital and deep expertise in alternative asset classes, Marley brings a trusted, institutional lens to high-barrier sectors traditionally reserved for the largest institutional investors. Before launching Magnolia Hill, Marley worked alongside the early co-founders of Future Standard (formerly FS Investments), helping scale what is now a $90B+ alternative asset manager. There, he gained firsthand experience building investment platforms, structuring innovative products, and leading groundbreaking partnerships with firms such as GSO Blackstone and KKR. Magnolia Hill owns and leads its sports investment focus through its sub-platform: Momentous Sports, investing in professional sports franchises and mixed-use districts designed to deliver high-yield, long-term returns. A devoted husband and father, Marley resides in Winter Park, FL, with his wife, Amanda and their three beautiful children.
